Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. Pogossian Performs Helga Thoene's Celebrated Arrangement of Bach's Chaconne for Violin and Choir
MOVSES POGOSSIAN A 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition winner and youngest-ever First Prize winner of the 1985 USSR National Violin Competition, Movses Pogossian has since established a multi-faceted career as a soloist, avid chamber musician, champion of new music, and a sought-after teacher. He made his American debut performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Boston Pops in 1990. Movses has recorded for Bridge, Summit, Melodia, and Albany labels. He is currently Professor of Violin at UCLA, and is also the Artistic Director of the acclaimed Dilijan Chamber Music Series at the Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles. "But first some praise for Pogossian, who is a terrific violinist. He has the flair and the huge technique of a Romantic-era specialist, a virtuosity and magnetism that he applies to newer music." ... NAMHEE HAN organ A native of South Korea, Namhee Han performs on the Southland's premier organs, including those at Saint James' in the City, First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, and Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. She was a featured artist at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in 2004. Namhee earned a Master's and Doctoral degree in organ performance at UCLA studying with Christoph Bull. Namhee is Organist of Westwood Presbyterian Church. Karla is also a soprano with Camerata Singers of Long Beach. She did her graduate work in Basel, Switzerland, and at the University of Minnesota. The ensemble tours worldwide, offering performances of varied repertoire embracing all styles of choral composition.
