Beverly Hills Audition Winners

Under the Artistic Direction of Laura Schmieder, talented rising artists from Southern California and around the world are selected at the Beverly Hills Auditions and presented monthly in the intimate and acoustically superb sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church, Manhattan Beach. From January through June, the concerts are repeated the next day on Beverly Hills' "Music In The Mansion" recital series in the Beverly Hills' historic Greystone Mansion.

Celebrates Liszt's 200th Birthday

KARINÉ POGHOSYAN

Ten years ago, Kariné Poghosyan performed the second concert of the then-new "Previews" series. Since then, she graduated from California State University, Northridge and went on to earn her Master's degree and Doctorate in record time at the Manhattan School of Music, where she is now on its distinguished faculty. Along the way, Kariné won the New West Symphony Discovery Artists Competition, the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition, CSUN Symphony Concerto Competition, the Artists International Auditions. Kariné Poghosyan has been described as "extraordinary" and a "larger-than-life" pianist, whose playing goes "to the heart of the music."

Heather and Ryan Reithmeier made their Renee & Henry Segerstrom Hall debut as soloists for Fauré's Requiem with the Pacific Symphony. Heather was named the 2010 Gwendolyn Roberts Young Artist of the Year by the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Ryan made his national tour debut with Opera A La Carte as Giuseppe in The Gondoliers. Both are graduates of Concordia College, Moorhead MN, OperaWorks, and SongFest, hold Master's degrees from CSUF, and are on the vocal faculty of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa.

The Quintessential Winds were formed as the University Wind Quintet at the Bob Cole Conservatory of California State University, Long Beach. Currently recording their first album, Quintessential Winds are featured on the Musician's Roster of the Los Angeles Arts Commission.

Born in Nizhny-Novgorod, Russia, pianist Svetlana Smolina has performed with orchestras and in recitals worldwide. Some recent notable solo appearances with orchestras include Mariinsky Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic at Avery Fischer Hall, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestra National de France, Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, with iPalpiti in Walt Disney Concert Hall, and numerous others. A frequent guest in the world's leading festivals, she has performed recitals in prestigious halls including Royal Covent Garden Opera, Mariinsky 3 Concert Hall, Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory Hall, Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Grand Artists Series in Tel-Aviv, Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome, and Vienna's Sacher Hall, to name just some. Dr. Smolina is DMA graduate from the University of Michigan. She has recorded for Decca/Phillips and with violinist Vadim Repin for Deutsche Grammophon in Berlin.

Born in Belarus and based in Tel Aviv, Slava Kagan-Paley made his debut in 1987 with the Leningrad Philharmonic as a soloist in Schumann's Requiem. Since then he completed his post-diploma vocal training at the Guildhall School in London and has performed in recitals and operas worldwide. In 1993, he performed the role of Joan of Arc in the world premiere of Arms for the Maid for the Royal Opera House Garden Venture. In Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, he sang the role of the Witch in the Lou Harrison's opera Rapunzel. Among numerous other career highlights, in March 1998, he performed a leading role in the world premiere of Péter Eötvös' opera Trois Soeurs for the Opéra National de Lyon conducted by Kent Nagano. In 1999, he recorded the album Laudate, containing eight Baroque gems including Pergolesi's Salve Regina and J.S. Bach's Erbarme Dich.

The Aiana String Quartet, winners of the 2011 Coleman-Barstow Prize for Strings at the Coleman International Chamber Music Competition, are the new Young Professional String Quartet at the University of Texas, where they are assistants to the Miro Quartet.

Ecuadorian-Spanish cellist Francisco Vila's interest in new music has paired him in collaboration with Grammy-Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov and Grammy-nominated composer/classical guitarist Apostolos Paraskevas in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall. Recent appearances included Los Angeles County Museum of Art in a radio broadcast recital with pianist Luiza Borac, Carnegie Hall as a member of the New York String Orchestra directed by Jaime Laredo, Philadelphia's Kimmel Center, and Walt Disney Concert Hall and Israel's Eilat International Music Festival with iPalpiti Orchestra of International Laureates. Upcoming performances include a recital at the Beaumaris Music Festival in Wales. Francisco studied under Janos Starker and Sharon Robinson, and chamber music with Menahem Pressler, at Indiana University. He now continues mentorship with Gary Hoffman in the Artist Diploma Program at the Queen Elisabeth Music School in Brussels.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Ohtae Kwon studied at Sunhwa Art High School and continued his studies at Yonsei University. In 2001 he joined National Police Symphony Orchestra as the principal trombonist and played with the Euro Asian Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the Gyeonggi Philharmonic. In 2006, Ohtae embarked on a journey to study in the U.S. with Terry Cravens under full scholarship at USC. He was the principal trombonist of the Los Angeles Festival Orchestra, LA National Symphony, USC Thornton Symphony, and the Southern California Philharmonic. In 2009, he was accepted to the Artist Diploma program of the USC Thornton School of Music, the first brass player to ever be admitted to the program. JENNI OLSON flute

Jenni Olson, fluteJenni Olson performs regularly with the chamber music ensemble Orion Winds, which she co-founded, and has performed with various orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, New West Symphony, and the Pacific Symphony. She is currently principal flute with the Stockton Symphony and second flute with the Long Beach Symphony and Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. Jenni earned her BA from California State University, Stanislaus and her MM and DMA from the University of Southern California, where she studied with Jim Walker.
