Kids Love Aviation Science (KLAS) |
As
of June 2006, 4,535 Children
have participated in the program. |

|
||
Welcome to the Museum's children's educational corner of the web site. As part of the KLAS program the children have an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history, understand the principles of flight and sit in the cockpit of a modern jet fighter. On the Museum tour they will find the airplanes and the people that love them. Some of them are active airline pilots while others are veterans of the golden age of flying. The hope is that the excitement of the flight line and the Docents that tour the children will encourage the desire to learn. The program is open to all local Elementary Schools in the area, Grades 4 and 5. Structured around the history of flight, and on California's contribution to aviation, the lessons stress the California standards for the English language arts of reading, writing and speaking for 4th and 5th grade. All the material and transportation are provided by the Museum and include the lesson plans, teacher material, and workbooks for the children. |
||
| The program starts at the school where the children learn about airplanes, airports and work on projects. | ||
The
second part of the program is the tour through the Museum. Here they are
instructed on the principles of flight and the history of aviation. On
an active airport, the children experience the excitement of flying as
they watch airplanes land and take off. |
||
Back
at the school, the children complete the workbook, working on word puzzles,
and experiments on the principles of flight. |

![]() The
Western Museum of Flight offers a basic airplane model building program
open to all children 9 years and up.
The first hour and a half is spent building a flying rubber band powered airplane called the Delta Dart. The remainder of the time is spent learning how to fly the model and participating in several flying activities. The children will be able to take their model home. The only tools (which
will be provided) that the children will use, in building the model, is
a pair of scissors and a glue stick. All wood is pre cut. |
