The Four Forces of Flight • • •

When the airplane is flying it is being pulled by four forces. The pull of the propeller is resisted by the drag of the air on the airplane. The weight of the airplane works against the lift of the airflow over the wings. If the airplane is flying straight and level, all these forces are in balance. To fly higher the pilot increases the lift over the weight, by increasing the speed of the airplane. On the other hand, if he wants to go down he reduces the lift by reducing the airplane speed. He does this by changing the power, thus the speed of the propeller..

Increasing lift makes the airplane go up • • • right?
The propeller pulls in the opposite direction as the drag on the airplane • • • right?
Reducing the power to the propeller will make the airplane go down • • • right?
