Hint: how long does one rope burn if lit at both ends?

Solution: Light both ends of one rope, and one end of the other. When the first rope burns to the middle, you know thirty minutes are up, so light the other end of the second rope (which now has thirty minutes left). After fifteen additional minutes, this rope will burn to the middle.
