Quick intro to Internet Relay Chat (IRC):

You have a unique nickname, which you can change by typing
/nick newnick
. Nicks cannot contain spaces.
To join a channel (room), type
/join #channelname
.
To say something in the channel, just type it.
To show an action, type
/me action
. For example, "/me is using the java client."
To see info on someone type
/whois nick
.
