2000 Mercedes Benz S-Class
The 2000 Mercedes Benz S-Class is a full-size, 5-passenger luxury sedan.
Base prices range from just under $70,000 for the S430 to just under $79,000
for the flagship S500. With approximately 15,000 units sold each year,
the S-Class falls somewhere in the middle of the Mercedes line-up
for sales. The S-class is Mercedes' most luxurious sedan and competes with
similar vehicles, including the BMW 7-Series, the Jaguar Vanden Plas, and
the Audi A8 4.2. The S-Class sells nearly 90% of its cars to men. Traditionally,
the average age range of an S-Class buyer is between 45 and 55 yeas of
age, with approximately 90% being married. Buyers in this segment tend
to lead an affluent lifestyle, supported by a $150,000 average yearly income.
Unlike most full-size luxury cars, the S-Class is fast. Equipped with a
standard 5.0 liter V8, producing over 300 horsepower at 5600RPM, the S500,
travels from 0-60 mph in an astonishing 6.1 seconds. The S430, equipped
with a 275 horsepower, 4.3 liter V8, is no slouch itself, being timed at
6.9 seconds 0-60. Both cars give an extremely smooth ride, due in
part to the AIRmatic suspension. This system uses front and rear air springs
to support vehicle weight and control ride height by adding or releasing
compressed air into each of the pneumatic suspension struts. Technological
advances are also
found in the navigation system; using the global positioning system (GPS)
to pinpoint the car's exact location, you will be guided by door to door
directions to your address of choice. In conjunction with the GPS system
TeleAid uses a dedicated cellular link to provide 24-hour contact with
Mercedes-Benz for roadside assistance and emergency calling. Mercedes'
flagship has been slightly down-sized for 2000, shedding almost 400 pounds
off its curb weight and several inches off its overall length. The V12
engine found in the 1999 S600 has been discontinued. As a result of these
changes, the price tags of these luxury sedans have also been scaled down,
opening the door for more drivers to get behind the wheel of this world
renowned luxury sedan.
