The department of public works oversees all projects and work occurring within the public right-of-way.

Capital Improvement Projects
Capital Improvement Projects such as street paving and storm drain construction are managed by public works staff. These projects are based on long-term plans, which prioritize and schedule projects throughout the City.

Public Works Permits
Permits are required for all excavation and/or construction in the public right-of-way. Most street right-of-way widths are not entirely paved, therefore property lines do not necessarily occur at the edge of the pavement. To determine the location of your front property line, and dimensions of the adjacent right-of-way, contact the public works department at City Hall or consult with a registered land surveyor. The City's Traffic Calming Program outlines a process and approved techniques for reducing traffic volumes and speeds. Traffic calming application materials and approved standards are available to download below (PDF format):

Parklands Department

The Parklands department is responsible for the maintenance, development and preservation of the City's 500 acres of Parkland and unimproved right-of-way.

The Parklands Committee meets the second Monday of each month to review park improvement projects, and private citizen requests relating to projects proposed within the parkland or unimproved right-of-way.

It is unlawful to remove, trim or plant a tree in the Parkland or unimproved right-of-way without City approval. For further information, please call the City Forester at (310)378-0383.
