The Peninsula Emergency Response Team was developed in the aftermath of the Northridge
earthquake, demonstrating the further importance of civilian volunteers during a disaster. As a
result, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, in cooperation with cities on the Palos Verdes
Peninsula, developed the Peninsula Emergency Response Team with the intent of giving
volunteers a higher level of basic skills in firefighting, search and rescue, disaster medicine, and
preparedness.
The purpose and intent of the program under the Emergency Response Team concept is to be prepared wherever you go. It is intended to help not only you and your immediate family, but those around you and then fanning outward to assist others.
The benefits of such a team can provide an effective first response. Trained volunteers also offer an important potential workforce to service organizations in non-hazardous functions such as shelter support, crowd control and evacuation. The PERT team meets on a monthly basis to review various disaster scenarios and potential disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, bomb threats, and wildfires |
