Authorize the Mayor to direct a letter to the Regional
Planning Commission supporting the continued operation of the Puente Hills
Landfill.
BACKGROUND:
The County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County
have requested the City’s support of new permits for the continued operation
of the Puente Hills Landfill. Mayor McTaggart has asked that the matter
be placed on the consent calendar for City Council authorization to direct
a letter in support of the permit to the Los Angeles County Regional Planning
Commission.
DISCUSSION:
The Puente Hills Landfill is utilized to some extent by
a majority of the Los Angeles area cities, including Rancho Palos Verdes.
According to the Sanitation District, the closing of the landfill would
result in a minimum cost of $1.4 billion countywide through increased
tip fees. More information on the need for the site is included in the
attached letter from Jim Stahl, Chief Engineer and General Manager of
the County Sanitation Districts.
Respectfully submitted,
Les Evans,
City Manager
For:
John McTaggart
Mayor
