TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL FROM: DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS DATE: SEPTEMBER 3, 2002 SUBJECT: AWARD CONTRACT AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT SERVICES FOR VALLON DRIVE/HAWTHORNE BLVD TRAFFIC SIGNAL INSTALLATION PROJECT Staff Coordinator: Nicole Jules, Sr. Engineer RECOMMENDATIONS
BACKGROUND On September 18, 2001, the City Council approved the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Vallon Drive. On April 16, 2002, the City Council authorized staff to proceed with the engineering design of a traditional traffic signal and to advertise for construction bids. Plans have been prepared and on August 22, 2002 bids were opened. The project was properly advertised and sealed bids were opened at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2002. Two bids were received ranging from a low of $103,710 to a high of $126,497.46. Bid results are as follow:
CONCLUSION Steiny and Company, Inc., as the apparent lowest responsive and responsible bidder, should be awarded the Vallon Drive/Hawthorne Blvd Traffic Signal Project. FISCAL IMPACT The recommended action authorizes expenditures up to $120,000 within the Capital Improvements Program budget. The total amount budgeted for this project is $135,000.
