SUBJECT: INTERVIEW SCHEDULE: MEMBERSHIP ON THE TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMISSION, PLANNING COMMISSION VACANCY, COMMITTEE/COMMISSION CHAIRS, AND LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

RECOMMENDATION

Consider conducting interviews during the 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. timeframe before the February 1, 15 and March 1, 2005 City Council meetings.

BACKGROUND

Recruitment for the newly established Traffic Safety Commission began the week of December 13 with the recruitment period running through January 17. Staff anticipates that applications received for this Commission will be distributed to the City Council with their mail on January 19, 2005. The same recruitment schedule was set for the vacancy on the Planning Commission.

To accommodate a speedy schedule for interviewing these candidates, staff recommends that Council consider conducting interviews before the Council Meetings on February 1, 15 and March 1, 2005. Of course, the number of applications received will determine the number of interview sessions required. Council will also have to decide whether to interview the Planning Commission candidates first and then commence interviewing for the Traffic Safety Commission candidates.

Council will recall that this past October and November several individuals interviewed for appointment to the now dis-established Traffic Committee.

These candidates were contacted and they have indicated that they are still interested in appointment to the newly established Traffic Safety Commission. Staff will re-submit their applications to the Council with the applications received with this new recruitment.

Selection of Committee and Commission Chairs

Upon completion of the recruitment and selection process for the Traffic Safety Commission and the Planning Commission, Council will need to schedule interviews for the chairs of the respective committees and commissions. The appointment of the current chairs, Planning Commission - Craig Mueller and Finance Advisory Committee – Becky Clerk occurred on February 17, 2004; Mel Hughes was appointed chair of the Emergency Preparedness Committee on April 6, 2004.

Committee and Commission Leadership Workshop

Another event to be considered relative to committees and commissions is the leadership workshop suggested by the Mayor and City Council. Presently, that workshop is scheduled for February 12 (please see the staff report on Budget Meetings).

CONCLUSION

With the establishment of the Traffic Safety Commission, the City Council now needs to interview candidates to fill the membership on that commission. In addition, Council needs to interview candidates for the vacancy now existing on the Planning Commission, select a date to interview the chairs for the various committees and commissions and determine when to hold the leadership workshop.
