RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Reject the only bid received on December 19, 2005 for Forrestal swale drainage improvement project
2. Request staff to re-advertise the project at a later date.

BACKGROUND

On December 19, 2005 bids were opened for the Forrestal swale drainage improvement project that would improve drainage in the nature preserve along Forrestal Drive and Intrepid Drive. Only one bid was received in the amount of $292,750 from Garcia Juarez Construction Inc. and it was substantially higher than the Engineer’s Estimate of $222,254.
The lack of bids is due to the type of the work and time of the year when contractors are mostly busy for end of the year construction completion. Staff believes that re-advertising the project in 2006 will result in a more competitive bidding process.
Staff recommends rejecting the bid received from Garcia Juarez Construction Inc., and re-advertising the project.

CONCLUSIONS

Adopting the staff recommendations will result in rejecting the bid received from Garcia Juarez Construction Inc. on December 19, 2005, and re-advertising the Forrestal swale drainage improvement project. Staff anticipates a new bid opening dated in March 2006 and consideration for award in May 2006.
