SUBJECT: APPOINTMENTS TO CITY ADVISORY BOARDS
1) Appoint four members to the Planning Commission, each with a four year term of office until February 21, 2010; 2) Appoint five members to the Finance Advisory Board with a four year term of office until February 21, 2010; and 3) Set dates to interview candidates for Commission and Committee Chairs.
On December 20, 2005, City Council authorized the City Clerk’s Office to recruit to fill expiring terms and vacancies on the Planning Commission and Finance Advisory Committee. The recruitment began the first week in January 2006 and ended on January 31, 2006.
Planning Commission: Appointment of Members
There are four seats available on the Planning Commission – three due to expiring terms (all three incumbents have applied for reappointment) and one vacancy due to the resignation of Jay Golida. The City received 15 applications from residents who are interested in serving on the Planning Commission. All 15 applicants indicated that appointment to the Planning Commission was their first choice. The Council interviewed all of the candidates on February 7th and 21st, except for Gina McLeod, who is on maternity leave, and Michael Nash, who declined to participate in the group interview but is still interested in being considered for appointment. A list of all of the applicants for the Planning Commission is attached to this report for the Council’s information. Staff has also prepared a ballot listing all of these candidates.
Finance Advisory Committee: Appointment of Members
There are five seats available on the Finance Advisory Committee – four due to expiring terms (three incumbents have applied for reappointment) and one vacancy due to the resignation of Benkai Bouey. The City received 12 applications from residents interested in serving on the Finance Advisory Committee. Six of the applicants indicated that appointment to the Finance Advisory Committee was their first choice. A list of all of the applicants for the Finance Advisory Committee is attached to this report for the Council’s information. Staff has prepared a ballot listing all of these candidates.
Appointment of Commission and Committee Chairs
The current Chairs of the City’s Advisory Board were appointed on the following dates:
Following the appointments this evening, staff recommends that the Council interview members interested in serving as Chair of the Planning Commission, Finance Advisory Committee and Emergency Preparedness Committee prior to the Council meeting on March 7, 2006, with appointment scheduled on the regular meeting later that evening. Staff recommends scheduling the interviews for Chair of the Traffic Safety Commission the evening of the April 18, 2006 Council meeting in order to be more commensurate with the expiration of Chair Jordan-Shepherd’s current term. Further, staff recommends holding off on interviewing for Chair of the Equestrian Committee until after Council considers that Committee’s annual report in March 2006.
