AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY/PALOS VERDES PENINSULA RELAY FOR LIFE

TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS

FROM: CITY MANAGER

DATE: May 2 2006

SUBJECT: AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY/PALOS VERDES PENINSULA RELAY FOR LIFE

RECOMMENDATION
Consider approval of the City’s participation in publicizing and participating in the 2006 Palos Verdes Peninsula Relay for Life.

BACKGROUND
Last year Mayor Clark and the City Council supported and participated in an innovative community mobilization effort called the Mayors’ Campaign Against Cancer. We were quite successful with the city volunteers who participated in Daffodil Days and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Relay for Life and raised over $4,000. Past Mayor Clark and Mayor Pro Tem Long participated in the relay and expressed an interest in doing so again in 2006. The Rancho Palos Verdes Volunteers, a team from the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, also expressed an interest in participating in the 2006 Relay for Life.

DISCUSSION
Mayor Wolowicz has agreed to play a part in the campaign this year. Activities will be similar to last year and will include the Relay for Life on August 5-6, 2006.
The campaign could include distribution of educational and promotional materials to residents, including the possibility of a Channel 3 Pubic Service Announcement. This level of support for a fund-raising campaign is equal to that which was provided last year.

FISCAL IMPACT
There is no direct fiscal impact to the City for participating in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Relay for Life. Some City staff will prepare publicity for the campaign.
