SUBJECT: DONATIONS TO PALOS VERDES PENINSULA HIGH SCHOOL
1) Authorize staff to place a full-page color advertisement in the 2007 Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Yearbook for a cost of $500; 2) Authorize staff to make a $500 donation to Palos Verdes Peninsula High School’s GRAD Nite 2007; and 3) Adopt Resolution No. 2006 - , a Resolution of the City Council of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes Amending Resolution No. 2006-41, the Budget Appropriation for Fiscal year 06-07, for a $1,000 Budget Adjustment to the City’s General Fund.
1. La Pantera Yearbook
In order to help fund the publication of “La Pantera”, the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Yearbook, local businesses and other organizations are invited to publish advertisements in the Yearbook. The City has placed ads in the 2002 and 2003 editions of the PVPHS Yearbook, but was not subsequently approached by the High School to place similar ads until this year. The cost of the various advertisement options are listed below:
Staff is suggesting that the City sponsor a full-page ad in the 2007 “La Pantera” Yearbook at a cost of $500. The contract and a sample of what the ad might look like are attached for reference. The signed contract must be submitted by October 21, 2006. The advertisement itself is due on November 11, 2006.
2. GRAD Nite 2007
The City received a letter from the Peninsula High School Grad Nite 2007 Fundraising Committee seeking a donation from the City for “Graduates Resisting Alcohol and Drugs.” The event will be held after the graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 14, 2007 at an undisclosed location. It is an all-night event designed to provide a safe, controlled, drug and alcohol free environment. The City provided a $500 donation to Grad Nite 2006. For this year’s event, suggested donations levels range from a $250 to $2,500. Staff suggests that the City provide the same level of funding as in 2006. The request letter is attached for Council’s information.
The City Council has already encumbered all of the funds in the FY 06-07 City Grant program. Therefore, if Council favors sponsoring either or both of these requests, a budget adjustment from the General fund reserve to the Community Outreach program would be required.
