CITY OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES PART-TIME EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
WORK SCHEDULE: Part-time employees may not work more than 1664 hours during any fiscal year (July 1-June 30), an average of 32 hours per week. Mandatory workdays include the first Saturday in March and July 4th. City park facilities are open a variety of hours, depending upon activity schedule. Part-time employees are expected to work evenings, weekends and holidays, whenever possible. All park buildings are closed on January 1, Thanksgiving Day, December 24 and December 25.
MEDICAL BENEFITS: Part time employees are entitled to Medical, Dental, Vision, EAP and Cafeteria Plan benefits. The City will pay $16 toward the Medical benefits. Employees must pay for the remainder of the monthly premium on the Medical benefits and the total premiums for any of the other health benefits that they choose.
RETIREMENT: The City participates in the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) using the 2.5% at 55 formula. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes pays 1% of the employee’s 8% share, with the employee contributing the remaining 7% from his/her annual salary. The City also makes additional contributions to the employee’s retirement account that vary from year to year depending on investment returns. Upon early separation prior to vesting, employees may cash out or roll over into an eligible account the Employee’s portion (8%) plus accrued interest. Employees may voluntarily participate in the ICMA Retirement Corporation’s 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.
SOCIAL SECURITY: The City does not withhold Social Security; however, Federal Law requires a 2.9% mandatory contribution to Medicare for each employee. The City pays half (1.45%) and the employee pays the other half (1.45%).
SHORT TERM DISABILITY: All employees participate in the State Short Term Disability Insurance program. The annual premium is determined by the state and is based on an employee’s gross annual pay. The premium is deducted from the employee’s pay.
EMPLOYEE INCENTIVE PROGRAM: Employees are eligible to receive monetary awards of up to 5% of their gross annual pay in recognition of exemplary performance, subject to the approval of the Department Head and City Manager.
CREDIT UNION: Credit union services are provided through the F&A Credit Union.
PROBATION: All competitive service initial hire and promotional appointments shall be tentative and subject to a probationary period of not less than six (6) months.
COMPENSATION: Because the City is a public agency, both full-time and part-time employees are exempt from many state wage and hour laws. Therefore, part-time employees are ineligible for overtime pay beyond eight hours of work per day, but are entitled to be paid overtime compensation at a rate of one and one-half times the employee’s regular rate of pay after 40 hours of work during a work week (under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act). A work week is defined as any additional hours worked after the first four hours on a Friday continuing through the first four hours worked on the following Friday.
Paychecks are automatically deposited directly into the employee’s personal checking or saving account. Therefore, all new employees shall have an open personal bank account prior to starting work.
SPECIAL NOTE: In compliance with the Immigration and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must verify identity and entitlement to work in the United States by providing required documentation.
