The Search for our next Conductor & Music DirectorFollowing the American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL) guidelines, President Larry Andrews appointed a Search Committee in the fall of 2006, which was formed with four Peninsula Symphony Association Board Members, two Orchestra Members, and one highly respected Advisory Board Member both in the community and trusted by orchestra. The Search Committee established their goal, which was to identify four finalists, each of whom would present one of the four concerts of the 2008-2009 Season. Based on performance and with consideration of various inputs, the Search Committee would make the final recommendation of our next Conductor & Music Director. Our Symphony was fortunate to have a dedicated committee chaired by Conrad Wedberg and deputy chair John Copper; other members included Warren Erikson, Ken Gash, John Williams, Helene Mirich-Spear, and Rebecca Rutkowski. Their work began by first updating the Job Description, and second, placing the advertisement in the Musician Union's Newsletters of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Orange County. The ad was also posted on the ASOL Website. No one could have expected the tremendous response. By February 2007, there were 136 resumes received. The applicants were from twenty- seven states and the District of Columbia, and the four countries of Canada, New Zealand, Germany, and Sweden. The Committee spent a wealth of time in the screening phases with thoughtful consideration of all resumes submitted, leading to phone interviews, then questionnaires for supplemental information, personal interviews and opportunities to observe rehearsals or concerts, and establishment of ground rules for the 2008/2009 season concerts. Due to the work of the Committee, we have an exciting 2008-2009 performance season planned. The guest conductor biographies of our final four, Gary Berkson , Andrew Shulman , Ricardo Soto , and David Weiss , can be found on our website. There will be various Association Membership opportunities for the 2008-2009 Season, which can be found in Membership Benefits located on the Association Membership page of our Website. We look forward to Association Members being active participants in the completion of this two-year search process! The final announcement will be forthcoming in July 2009, at which time we will culminate this extensive and exciting process with the announcement of the Peninsula Symphony's next Conductor & Music Director. The excitement is only just beginning... |
