2001-2002 Concert Series

Free - Donations Appreciated
Under the Artistic Direction of Laura Schmieder, talented
rising young artists from Southern California and around the
world are selected by audition and presented monthly in the
intimate and acoustically superb sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran
Church, Manhattan Beach. From January through May 2008, the
concerts are repeated the next day on Beverly Hills' "Music In
The Mansion" recital series in the historic Beverly Hills
Greystone Mansion.

KAZEM ABDULLAH clarinetist
KELLY LIN, pianist
KAZEM ABDULLAH is winner of the
ARTS National Talent Search Competition
in 1997 and many other awards, most
recently being a grand prize of the National
Symphony Orchestra Competition and the
Bill Cerutti Award from WETA public radio
in Washington D.C. He soloed with
Cincinnati and National Symphony
orchestras and performs in recitals and
participates in music festivals in the US and abroad. On Friday,
October 19, 2001, Kazem will perform Copland's Clarinet
Concerto with the USC Thornton Symphony.
Born in Indiana, Kazem began playing clarinet at the age of
nine and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan
and Magna cum Laude from the Cincinnati Conservatory of
Music in 2000. Currently, Kazem pursues a Master's Degree at
USC.

KARINE POGHOSYAN pianist
KARINE POGHOSYAN was born in
Armenia where she graduated with honors
from Art School and Melikian Musical
College in Yerevan, won numerous
competitions, performed in recitals and
soloed with orchestra, and entered Komitas
State Conservatory. Karine immigrated to
the U.S.A. in 1998, and currently pursues a
Bachelor's Degree at CSU Northridge. Since
arriving in Los Angeles, Karine has won numerous scholarships
and awards. In October 2000 she performed the Liszt Piano
Concerto with CSUN Symphony Orchestra. Karine wishes to
dedicate her performance of the works she has selected after the
intermission to the victims of the September 11 tragedy.

KEVIN COOPER guitar
JESSICA MOK, a native of
Seoul, Korea, began her flute
studies at the age 10 and received
her Artist Diploma of Music and
Master of Music degrees from the
Cincinnati College Conservatory.
She received a Bachelor of Music
from USC. Among her numerous
awards include a Grand Prize and
Concerto in the Young Artists
Peninsula Competition, first prizes
in the New York Flute Club
Competition, Los Angeles
Philharmonic Pasadena
Instrumental Competition, National Flute Association, Los
Angeles International Philharmonic Excellence in Diversity
Competition. She participated in festivals in Aspen, Sarasota,
and Round Top. In 2000 she gave a debut recital at Weill Hall at
Carnegie Hall.
KEVIN COOPER is pursuing a
Master of Classical Guitar
performance degree at USC, where
he received several honors
including the Mary Pickford
Foundation Endowed Scholarship
in Classical Guitar. In 1996 he
received the Yamaha Young
Performing Artists Award.
Pianist PAUL SWITZLER earned his Bachelor and Master of
Music Degrees from the University of the Pacific Conservatory
at Stockton, California. His primary studies were under Edward
Shadbolt, who was a student of Bela Bartók and Zoltán Kodály.
Paul is known for his expertise at coaching and accompanying
aspiring artists. |

XIBEI JIA pianist (China)
XIBEI JIA arrived in Los
Angeles almost 2 years ago from
her native China, and currently is in
the 10th grade at the Aube Tzerko
Piano Academy of the New Roads
School in Santa Monica, where she
studies with Mary Ann Cummins.
In a short time in Los Angeles she
has won numerous musical honors.
Most recently, she won the Music
Center Spotlight Award and
appeared with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic as a winner of the Bronislav Kaper Award. She
also won the State MTAC concerto competition and the Rotary
Club's Young Musicans Competition and has soloed with
Westchester/Marina and the Pacific Palisades orchestras. Xibei
is a recipient of YMF Fred Bock Memorial Scholarship, and
also holds a scholarship from Westside Junior Philharmonic.
Xibei participated in master classes with John Perry and Murray
Perahia.

BRENDA JONES pianist
BRENDA JONES, a USC senior
and student of John Perry, is
pursuing a piano performance
degree as well as minor in business
administration. Her first solo
performance with orchestra was at
the age of eight. As a recipient of
the prestigious Gilmore Young
Artist Award in 1998, she has had
numerous concerts nationwide.
Other awards include Los Angeles
Music Center Spotlight Award and
top prizes in the Bronislav Kaper and Kingsville competitions.
She has appeared on NPR "Performance Today" as well as
91.5KUSC and Michigan Public Radio. Brenda recently
performed with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles
Chamber Orchestra, Symphonies in the Glen, and participated in
festivals in Aspen, Sarasota and New York.

ADOLFO GUTIERREZ ARENAS cellist (Spain)
KARINA SABAC, pianist (Romania)
ADOLFO GUTIERREZ ARENAS was
born in Munich, Germany in 1975 and
graduated from the Reina Sofia School of
Music under Swedish cellist Frans
Helmerson. He continued violoncello
studies with Lluis Claret and participated in
master courses with such eminent musicians
as Janos Starker, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, David
Geringas, and Ralph Kirshbaum. Currently Adolfo is studying
with Bernard Greenhouse cellist of the famed Beaux Art Trio
for over three decades. As a member of the Beethoven String
Quartet and the Scarlatti Piano Quartet, sponsored by the Carlos
de Amberes Foundation, he performed throughout Spain. In
chamber music, he performed in festivals in Germany, France,
and Holland. Presently, Adolfo is a member of the Arizcuren
String Trio. Adolfo has been among selected soloists for the
1999 International Laureates Music Festival and performed solo
with I PALPITI Chamber Orchestra in Los Angeles. Season
engagements include numerous performances of Beethoven's
entire works for cello and piano and Bach's Six Suites.
KARINA SABAC was born in Romania in
1978. Her studies in the Romanian "George
Enesco" High School in Bucharest were
accomplished simultaneously with her
University studies in Academy of Arts
"Hochschule der Künste" of Berlin. In 2001,
she received the Masters degree at University of Southern
California, in Los Angeles, where she is presently enrolled in
the doctoral program studing with Professor John Perry.

Cellist FANG FANG XU is a Doctoral Candidate in cello
performance at USC studying with Eleonore Schoenfeld.
Violinist CHARLES PILON is a graduate student in violin
performance at USC studying with Robert Lipsett.
Pianist VALERIA MORGOVSKAYA, a graduate of the Kiev
State Conservatory, immigrated to the United States in 1990.
Since 1991, she has been the official accompanist of the
International Gregor Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists at USC.
She is currently on staff at Loyola Marymount University as an
accompanist and is often engaged in that capacity at USC and
the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. |

ALEXANDRU TOMESCU violin (Romania)
PAVEL PETROV, piano (Russia)
ALEXANDRU TOMESCU is the
winner of 28 international awards
including 2nd Gran Prix/Menuhin
Prize at the Jaques Thibaud
International Violin Competition in
Paris and a Gold Medal in the Enescu
International Violin Competition,
Romania. Hailed in Berliner
Morgenpost as "a violin superstar," in
Le Monde, France as "one of the great players of violin in the
world," and in De Gool-en Eemlander, Holland, as "a wonder
indeed," Alexandru enjoys recognition being among elite
violinists of his generation. He has appeared as soloist with
major orchestras in his native Romania as well as with
orchestras throughout Europe, South and North Korea, the
Philippines, Turkey, and Japan. Most recently he performed
with L'Orchestre National de France under Christoph
Eschenbach and Israel Philharmonic under Sergiu Comissiona.
He graduated from Academy of Music in Bucharest with
Professor Stefan Gheorghiu, took master classes with Ruggero
Ricci, and studied with Eduard Schmieder in Europe and USA.
From1998-2000 he was a selected artist of Young Artists
International and was a featured soloist in its annual
International Laureates Festival in Los Angeles, Taos and Seoul.
In 2001, he was featured in THE STRAD and French Classica
Magazine.
A new name on the Los Angeles musical scene, PAVEL
PETROV recently arrived from Russia where he studied at the
Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, and currently
enrolled at USC Thornton School of Music under Professor
Daniel Pollack. Pavel is a First-Prize winner of the All-Russia
Glinka's and Saphonof Piano competitions in Moscow.
Internationally, he received 2nd prize in Spain (2000) and 4th
prize in Senigalia,Italy (1995). Pavel participated in many
international music festivals ( Japan, Macedonia, Spain, Russia),
and performed as a soloist to high acclaim in his native Russia. |

CORINNE LARSEN soprano
with DANIEL CARIAGA, piano
and DAVID SHERR, clarinet
CORINNE LARSEN has studied
with Marvellee Cariaga since age
14. A graduate of the Orange
County School of the Arts, she
participated in the Opera Arts
Training Program in San Francisco
in 1995-96. She has won prizes in
the Carmel Music Society Voice
Competition, the Los Angeles
Artists of the Future Competition
and the American Institute of Fine
Arts Voice Competition, as well as
many scholarships. In the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons she
covered roles in Manon, Cosi fan Tutte, The Magic Flute, and
Don Giovanni. She has sung numerous recitals, participated in
Summer Songfest in 1997, 1998, and 2000, and most recently
performed in the Young Artists Peninsula Music Festival. She
appeared in "Sundays at Two" in 1995. She spent last summer at
Aspen with a full fellowship in Voice Performance Studies and
was a regional finalist at the Metropolitan Opera auditions in
October.
