2002-2003 Concert Series

Free - Donations Appreciated
Under the Artistic Direction of Laura Schmieder, talented
rising young artists from Southern California and around the
world are selected by audition and presented monthly in the
intimate and acoustically superb sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran
Church, Manhattan Beach. From January through May 2008, the
concerts are repeated the next day on Beverly Hills' "Music In
The Mansion" recital series in the historic Beverly Hills
Greystone Mansion.

SAYAKO KUSAKA violin
PAVEL PETROV piano
Winner of many prestigious competitions,
violinist SAYAKO KUSAKA received a
Silver Medal in the Premio Paganini
International Violin Competition in Italy,
where she also won the Best Performer
Caprice Award, and third prize in the 8th
Jean Sibelius International Violin
Competition in Finland. She soloed with the
Tokyo Symphony, the Kirov Orchestra, and
the Japan, Osaka and Kansai Philharmonics,
and was a featured soloist with I PALPITI in Los Angeles and
Japan. She also soloed and recorded with the Meadows
Symphony Orchestra and continues her studies with Professor
Eduard Schmieder at Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas.
This summer she was a featured soloist with I PALPITI in the
6th Annual International Laureates Festival.

JAKUB OMSKY cello
GEORGI SLAVCHEV piano
JAKUB OMSKY was born in
Warsaw, Poland, where he started as
the youngest student in the history of
the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy.
He continued his studies with Peter
Rejto and Andor Toth, Jr. at the
Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, graduating with Honors
in 1995 (Bachelor of Music) and in 1997 (Artist Diploma). He is
continuing his studies at USC under Eleanor Schoenfeld. Jakub
has performed at prestigious summer festivals including
Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, and Music
Academy of the West.

MICHAEL KUDIRKA met at USC
and took 1st and 2nd prizes
respectively in the 10th Annual
Portland Guitar Competition. As a
duo they have performed extensively
on the West Coast as well as in
Chicago and Osaka, Japan.

SHERYL LEE piano
Canadian pianist SHERYL LEE attended
the Juilliard pre-college program. She
continued her education at Yale and is
currently studying with John Perry at USC.
A recipient of many awards, she has
performed with the Utah Symphony, the
Haling Park Orchestra and Mill Hill
Sinfonia in London, and the Bratislava
Chamber Orchestra in Austria, and has
given recitals in New York, Boston, Connecticut, London, and
Hong Kong.

DANIEL AUSTRICH violin
VALERIA MORGOVSKAYA piano
Born in St. Petersburg in 1984,
DANIEL AUSTRICH entered
St. Petersburg Conservatory when
he was 9 years old. His teacher
there and his current mentor is Alla
Aranovskaya, first violinist of the
St. Petersburg Quartet. He performed as a soloist with
orchestras in the Grand Philharmonic Hall and other prestigious
venues. In 1997 his family moved to Germany, where he won
first prizes in the Steinway & Sons Competition and Jeunesses
Musicales, and most recently won a Guarneri violin performing
with the North German Radio and Zurich Chamber Orchestra.
He is continuing his studies under Ms. Aranovskaya at Oberlin
College.

ANDRÉ DUBELSTEN trumpet &
DEVON GUTHRIE soprano
with
ROSEMARY HYLER RITTER piano
ANDRÉ DUBELSTEN and DEVON
GUTHRIE are two 16-year-old friends
who perform a baroque repertoire for
soprano and trumpet as well as solo
repertoires. In 2001 André won 1st prize
in the National Trumpet Competition
and won in the brass/woodwind section
of the Vancouver Symphony Competition. He has performed
throughout the U.S. and was a member of the Disney Orchestra
(1997-1999). He has studied with Tim Morrison and Wynton
Marsalis. André plans to attend the Juilliard School of Music
this fall. In 2001 Devon Guthrie was a semifinalist in the L.A.
Music Center Spotlight Awards in the Classical Voice Division
and 1st-prize winner in the British Arts Awards in London. She
has performed as a soloist with the YMF Debut Orchestra and
the South Coast Symphony, and is a student of Elisabeth
Howard of Vocal Power Academy.

FANG FANG XU cello
GIDEON RUBIN piano
Cellist FANG FANG XU began cello
lessons with her father in Beijing at age 6,
attended the Central Conservatory of
Beijing, and toured Singapore. In 1990 she
moved to the U.S. and continued her studies
with Professor Eleonore Shoenfeld at USC,
where she earned Bachelor's and Master's
degrees in music in cello performance. She
has won many competitions in Southern
California, performed with orchestras as a
soloist, and in 2001 joined Philharmonie der Nationen on tour in
Spain and Germany. She is in the USC doctoral program.

EDNA YUAN-YUAN CHIA piano
A native of Taiwan, pianist EDNA
YUAN-YUAN CHIA received her
Bachelor's degree from National Taiwan
University in 1997. She has been a
winner in both Piano Performance and
Composition in the National Taiwan
Music Competition, and in the U.S.
received an award from the Leni FeBland
Foundation, a Dean's scholarship from
the USC Thornton School of Music, and
most recently second prize in the annual
Carmel Music Society Competition.

TIMO-VEIKKO VALVE cello
GIDEON RUBIN piano
Finnish cellist TIMO-VEIKKO VALVE
has soloed in Finland with major orchestras
including the Finnish Radio Symphony and
the Helsinki String Chamber Orchestra. He
has appeared as a soloist and a chamber
musician in France, Ireland, Great Britain,
Germany, Belgium, South Africa, and
Norway, and has performed in numerous
festivals. Second prize winner in the
Eurovision Grand Prix for Young Musicians in 2000,
Timo-Veikko performs both the modern and the romantic
repertoire for the cello. He has recorded for the Finnish
Broadcasting Company and for TV. His 2002 concerts include a
performance of Schumann's concerto with Sinfonia Lahti
conducted by Paavo Berglund, a solo recital in the Lux Musicae
festival, and a solo appearance with I PALPITI at the Ford
Amphitheatre the 6th Annual International Laureates Festival.
